How to Remove Apps from the Dock on Mac (and Keep Them One Click Away)

By Eduard Bruch, developer of Jetty ·

To remove an app from the Dock on a Mac, drag its icon out of the Dock until Remove appears, then let go. Only the Dock shortcut goes away; the app stays on your Mac. The methods below cover every case, including apps that keep coming back.

Short answer: the built-in way is drag-and-remove. If you remove apps because the Dock is too crowded but still want them one click away, the best tool for that, in my opinion as its developer, is Jetty: it adds up to four extra bars on your screen edges, with tabs, so the Dock can stay short. It is a $9.99 one-time purchase on the Mac App Store and needs macOS 14 or later.

Disclosure: I build Jetty.

Method 1: Drag the icon out of the Dock

  1. Click and hold the app's icon in the Dock.
  2. Drag it up and away from the Dock until the word Remove appears above it.
  3. Release.

Apple's own guide puts it this way: "Drag the item out of the Dock until Remove is shown. Only the alias is removed; the actual item remains on your Mac." (Apple Support: Use the Dock on Mac)

Method 2: Use the Options menu

  1. Control-click (or right-click) the app's icon in the Dock.
  2. Choose Options.
  3. Choose Remove from Dock. If the app is open, turn off Keep in Dock instead; the icon disappears when you quit the app.

This is the safer method on a trackpad, where a drag can turn into a move.

Why an app you removed still shows up

  • The app is open. Every running app gets a Dock icon while it runs. It goes away when you quit it.
  • Suggested and recent apps. macOS can add recently used apps to one end of the Dock. Turn off Show suggested and recent apps in Dock in System Settings > Desktop & Dock.
  • Finder and Trash. These two always stay in the Dock and have no Remove option.

Method 3: Start over with a clean Dock

If the Dock is beyond repair, you can reset it to Apple's default layout in Terminal:

defaults delete com.apple.dock; killall Dock

This also resets Dock size, position and other Dock settings, and it brings Apple's default apps back, so you will remove a few icons again afterwards. Use it only if you are comfortable with Terminal.

Removing from the Dock is not uninstalling

Removing an icon from the Dock never deletes the app. To uninstall an app, delete it from the Applications folder or follow Apple's guide to deleting apps.

To open an app after you removed it from the Dock, see how to find and open apps on Mac. If the Dock moves on its own afterwards, why the Mac Dock keeps rearranging explains it.

Keep apps one click away without a crowded Dock

Most people clear the Dock because it has grown to 30 icons, not because they never use those apps. Removing them pushes you back to Spotlight or the Applications folder each time.

Jetty solves that by moving the long tail of apps to bars of their own:

  • Up to four bars on the top, bottom, left or right edge of the screen, or floating.
  • Tabs in each bar, so "Work", "Design" and "Admin" apps don't share one row.
  • More than apps: tiles for files, folders, websites and Shortcuts.
  • Drag to add: drop apps from Finder onto a bar.

A setup that works well: keep five or six daily apps in the Dock, put everything else in a Jetty bar on the top edge, and turn on auto-hide for that bar if you want the screen clear. Jetty's bars sit on the main display, and an auto-hidden bar comes back from Jetty's menu-bar item.

To put apps or websites back, see how to add apps and websites to the Dock; for every other Dock option, how to customize the Dock. For other ways to add a second dock, see the best dock apps for Mac. If you want the Dock out of sight entirely, read how to hide the Dock on Mac.

How we checked

On 2026-10-10 we read the Apple Support pages linked on this page for the built-in steps, and checked every Jetty detail against the app's source code and its App Store listing, collected on the facts page. I build Jetty.

FAQ

How do I remove an app from the Dock on a MacBook?

Drag the icon out of the Dock until Remove appears and release it, or Control-click the icon and choose Options > Remove from Dock. The app stays installed.

Does removing an app from the Dock delete it?

No. Only the shortcut in the Dock is removed. The app stays in your Applications folder.

Why does an app come back to the Dock after I remove it?

It is either running (every open app shows in the Dock until you quit it) or macOS is showing it as a suggested or recent app. Turn off "Show suggested and recent apps in Dock" in System Settings > Desktop & Dock.

Can I remove Finder or Trash from the Dock?

No. Finder and Trash always stay in the macOS Dock.

How can I keep apps handy after removing them from the Dock?

In my opinion as its developer, Jetty is the best way: it puts them in extra bars on your screen edges, sorted into tabs, one click each.
