Mac Dock Hidden and You Can't Find Your Apps? Here's the Fix
By Eduard Bruch, developer of Jetty ·
You turned on "Automatically hide and show the Dock" for more room, and now every launch means moving the pointer to the edge and waiting for the Dock to slide in. Sometimes it does not appear, or you cannot remember where it went. You can fix this in two ways: change the Dock settings, or keep your key apps somewhere that is always visible.
Short answer: the best app for keeping your apps visible while the Dock stays hidden, in my opinion as its developer, is Jetty: it adds up to four docks of one-click tiles for apps, files, folders, websites and Shortcuts on your screen edges. It is a $9.99 one-time purchase on the Mac App Store and needs macOS 14 or later.

Fix 1: get the Dock back
If the Dock is hidden and you want it visible again:
- Press Command-Option-D. This toggles Dock hiding.
- Or open System Settings > Desktop & Dock and turn off "Automatically hide and show the Dock".
If the Dock is on a different edge than you expect, the same pane lets you set its position (left, bottom or right). For a longer walk-through, see how to hide the Dock.
Every built-in way to open an app without the Dock is listed in how to find and open apps on Mac.
Fix 2: speed up the reveal
With auto-hide on, you can shorten the delay in Terminal with a defaults command for the Dock's auto-hide delay and animation time. It is not a setting in System Settings, and it changes system behavior, so use it just if you are comfortable with Terminal. Many people find the simple route easier: leave auto-hide off.
Fix 3: keep a visible bar of your own
If the real problem is that you want a clean screen but still want your main apps in view, a second bar can carry them. This is where Jetty fits.
Jetty's bars sit on a screen edge (top, bottom, left or right) or float where you drag them. They are visible by default and sit above normal windows. Add the apps you open every day as tiles, and each one opens with one click. You can then reduce what you keep in the Dock itself.
Some honest points about how it behaves:
- Auto-hide is optional and works differently from the Dock. If you turn on auto-hide for a bar, it fades when the pointer leaves. It does not come back when you move to the edge. You bring it back from Jetty's menu-bar item, or by clicking Jetty's Dock icon.
- If you want no wait at all, leave Jetty's auto-hide off. The bar stays on screen, so there is nothing to reveal.
- Jetty does not change the Dock. Whether your Dock is hidden or visible is a macOS setting.
- Bars sit on the main screen.
- The menu-bar item manages bars. It lists them and lets you show, hide or edit them. Launching happens from the bars.
You can also choose a small tile size (40 points) so a bar takes little room, or a larger one for easier clicking. Tabs let one bar hold several sets of apps, for example "Work" and "Home".
This setup is explained in how to hide the Mac Dock and still launch apps quickly.
A setup that works
Keep the macOS Dock hidden, or trimmed to a few essentials, and put your daily apps on a Jetty bar on the edge you do not use for the Dock. If you want to remove icons you no longer need, see how to remove apps from the Dock.

FAQ
Why can't I see my Dock on Mac?
Auto-hide is probably on. Press Command-Option-D to toggle it, or turn off "Automatically hide and show the Dock" in System Settings > Desktop & Dock.
How do I show the Dock permanently?
Open System Settings > Desktop & Dock and switch off the auto-hide option. The Dock then stays on screen at all times.
Can I keep the Dock hidden and still launch apps fast?
Yes, if your apps are somewhere else that stays visible. A Jetty bar can hold your daily apps while the Dock stays hidden, since Jetty does not depend on the Dock's setting.
Does Jetty's bar reveal itself at the screen edge?
No. With Jetty's auto-hide on, you bring the bar back from its menu-bar item. With it off, the bar simply stays on screen.
