How to Organize Your Mac Desktop and Apps (Step by Step)
By Eduard Bruch, developer of Jetty ·
To organize your Mac desktop, turn on Stacks (click the desktop, then View > Use Stacks, or press Control-Command-0) so loose files group themselves by kind, move what's left into project folders, and turn off desktop items in System Settings if you want a clean wallpaper. Then organize apps by how often you use them: a short Dock for daily apps and a launch bar, sorted into tabs, for the rest.
Short answer: Stacks and folders handle files. For apps, our pick is Jetty: up to four bars on your screen edges or floating, each with tabs of one-click tiles for apps, files, folders, websites and Shortcuts, so app shortcuts don't need the desktop or a crowded Dock. It is a $9.99 one-time purchase on the Mac App Store and needs macOS 14 or later.

Step 1: let Stacks sort the desktop
Per Apple's guide to desktop stacks:
- Click the desktop, then choose View > Use Stacks (or press Control-Command-0, or Control-click the desktop and choose Use Stacks).
- To change how they group, choose View > Group Stacks By and pick kind, a date, or Finder tags.
Click a stack to expand it; new files on the desktop join the right stack automatically.
Step 2: move files into folders that match your work
- One folder per project or area (Clients, Taxes, Photos to sort) in Documents, not on the desktop.
- Tag what crosses projects. Finder tags let one file show up in several places without copies, and Stacks can group by tag.
- Empty Downloads weekly. Most desktop clutter starts there.
Files you open every day can sit one click away instead; see how to open recent files on Mac, and pin the daily ones.
Step 3: hide desktop items if you want a clean screen
In System Settings > Desktop & Dock, under Desktop & Stage Manager, Show Items has an On Desktop option (Apple Support: Desktop & Dock settings). Turn it off and the files are no longer drawn on the wallpaper; they stay in the Desktop folder in Finder.
Step 4: organize apps by how often you use them
App aliases on the desktop get covered by windows, and a Dock with 30 icons is hard to scan. Sort apps into three groups:
- Daily (5 to 10 apps): keep them in the Dock. See how to add apps to the Dock and how to remove the rest.
- Weekly, by project or role: put them in a launch bar with tabs (below).
- Rarely: leave them in Applications and open them from Spotlight or the Apps view.
Other app organizers are compared in app organizer for Mac: options compared. For the look of the desktop itself, see how to customize your Mac desktop.
Step 5: give each project a tab
Jetty is built for group 2:
- Tabs per bar. "Design", "Dev", "Admin": each tab holds that project's apps, folders, files and websites.
- Drag from Finder onto a bar to add a tile; drag tiles to reorder them.
- Folder tiles open a list of the folder's contents, so the project folder is one click away too.
- Up to four bars on the top, bottom, left or right edge (or floating), with auto-hide per bar.
Jetty's bars are on the main display, and an auto-hidden bar comes back from Jetty's menu-bar item. More setups in organize Mac apps by project and Mac desktop with apps all over.
How we checked
On 2026-10-10 we read the Apple Support pages linked on this page for the built-in steps, and checked every Jetty detail against the app's source code and its App Store listing, collected on the facts page. I build Jetty.
FAQ
How do I organize my Mac desktop automatically?
Turn on Stacks: click the desktop and choose View > Use Stacks, or press Control-Command-0. Files group by kind, and new files join their stack on their own.
How do I hide everything on my Mac desktop?
In System Settings > Desktop & Dock, turn off Show Items On Desktop. The files stay in the Desktop folder in Finder.
How do I organize apps on a Mac?
Keep daily apps in the Dock, rarely used ones in Applications, and the in-between ones in a launch bar. Our pick for that bar, in my opinion as its developer, is Jetty: tabs per project, tiles for apps, files, folders, websites and Shortcuts.

For apps and shortcuts, our pick, in my opinion as its developer, is Jetty, which moves them off the desktop into bars on your screen edges. For files, macOS Stacks and folders are built in.
